Shipka Monument restoration project set for 2029 completion

Bulgarian Minister of Culture Evtim Miloshev and restoration specialists are providing updates on the repair of the Shipka Freedom Monument. The monument was closed to visitors in early September due to its deteriorating condition, which includes falling stones, damaged joints, and moisture infiltration.

The restoration project aims to replace approximately 380 stone cladding blocks and fully re-grout the structure. Experts will evaluate each stone individually to determine whether it should be replaced or reinforced to maintain the monument's original appearance. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2029.

To ensure quality and authenticity, Ministry of Culture experts will conduct monthly site visits, while the director of the Shipka-Buzludzha Museum is required to provide progress reports every 10 days, accompanied by photographic evidence. President Rumen Radev has emphasized that the monument's appearance must remain unchanged following the repairs.
