Shipka Freedom Monument restoration to preserve original appearance
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has addressed concerns regarding the ongoing restoration of the Shipka Freedom Monument within the Shipka-Buzludzha National Park-Museum. Radev emphasized that the monument is being reinforced rather than demolished, stating it will be restored to its original appearance as built by previous generations.
To ensure historical accuracy, cladding elements and parts of the northern staircase have been carefully removed and numbered to be reinstalled once a stable foundation is constructed. The project includes structural reinforcement, conservation, and landscaping, with specific plans to make the site accessible to people with disabilities.
Regarding the internal exhibition, Radev noted that many current items are reproductions due to poor storage conditions caused by the monument's deterioration. Following the restoration, the collection will be expanded with new exhibits while retaining key historical items such as the Samara Flag and the seal of Count Ignatiev. The Prime Minister defended the necessity of the work, citing risks from moisture and falling stones that had made the site dangerous.
