Shipka Pass battles commemorated as key Russo-Turkish War milestone

The historical battles at Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) are commemorated as a defining moment in Bulgarian military history. Between August 9 and August 14, 1877, Bulgarian volunteers and Russian soldiers defended the strategic pass against significantly larger Ottoman forces.

Control of the Shipka Pass was vital to maintaining the connection between northern and southern Bulgaria and allowing the Russian army to operate south of the Balkan Mountains. During the decisive fighting, the Shipka detachment, consisting of approximately 7,500 Bulgarian volunteers and 27 cannons, faced an Ottoman force of 27,000 troops and 34 cannons.

The defense resulted in heavy casualties: the Shipka detachment lost 535 Bulgarian volunteers and 3,100 Russian soldiers, while Ottoman losses exceeded 8,200 personnel. The successful defense prevented Ottoman forces from reinforcing the siege at Pleven, ultimately contributing to the restoration of Bulgarian statehood.
