Shiranthi Rajapaksa detained amid corruption investigation
A Sri Lankan court has extended the detention of Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. She was arrested on October 7 following allegations that her charity misused donations intended for a children’s hospital.
The legal action is part of a broader effort to hold members of the influential Rajapaksa dynasty accountable. The family held significant power in Sri Lanka for nearly two decades until being ousted during a youth-led uprising in 2022.
In addition to Shiranthi Rajapaksa, her son Namal Rajapaksa, a parliamentarian and national organiser for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, remains in custody following his arrest a month prior on bribery charges. The investigations follow years of scrutiny regarding the family's governance and the country's subsequent economic crisis.
