Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre granted bail in Dombivli hospital assault case
Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was granted bail by a Kalyan court after he and three aides were arrested for assaulting two doctors and nurses at the Kalyan‑Dombivli Municipal Corporation‑run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli on July 6. The confrontation stemmed from a family’s anger when doctors advised moving a newborn to another facility due to a lack of NICU beds. Mhatre claimed he intervened as a public representative, not out of personal animosity. He cited health concerns – a single kidney and high blood pressure – and reported chest pain, which led to his brief hospitalization before the bail hearing. The magistrate denied a video‑conference appearance and ordered his in‑person production, after which bail was approved.
The incident prompted two doctors to resign, citing fear and emotional trauma, and triggered a statewide black‑ribbon protest by resident doctors across government and semi‑government hospitals. The case remains under investigation for assaulting public servants, causing hurt, criminal intimidation and related charges.
