India: Political tensions rise over Independence Day celebrations and women's quota implementation

Various political and cultural developments occurred in India surrounding Independence Day. The Shiv Sena (UBT) accused the BJP of turning national celebrations into political spectacles, specifically criticizing initiatives like ‘Tiranga Yatra’ and the Prime Minister’s choice of attire as attempts to project the ruling party as the sole protector of national symbols.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain the delay in implementing the 2023 Women’s Reservation Act. Raut also suggested that leaders over the age of 75 should transition power to the youth.

In the entertainment sector, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued show-cause notices to actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff regarding a Vimal Elaichi advertisement. The FDA alleges the ad serves as surrogate advertising for pan masala, which is currently banned in the state. Additionally, actor Govinda publicly addressed his wife, Sunita Ahuja, requesting she refrain from making statements that could damage his professional image.

In the arts, actor Gajraj Rao praised theater performer Vinay Pathak for his performance in a production of ‘King Lear’ at Prithvi Theatre.
