Shivcharan Gupta’s Funeral Held in Sonipat Old‑Age Home, Daughters Watch via Video Call

Shivcharan Ramratan Gupta, a 74‑year‑old former Mumbai cloth merchant, spent his final years in an old‑age home in Sonipat, Haryana. He died there and was cremated in the facility. None of his three daughters attended the ceremony in person; instead they observed the last rites through a video call and asked the home staff to record the proceedings. One daughter transferred 5,100 rupees to cover the funeral expenses and later requested a video of the rites.

The incident sparked widespread discussion on social media about changing family responsibilities and funeral customs in modern India. Reports highlighted that the daughters, two of whom are school teachers, cited lack of time as the reason for not visiting the home, prompting public debate over the role of technology in personal rituals and the perceived neglect of elderly parents.
