Shivraj Singh Chouhan claims One Nation One Election could happen by 2029

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has suggested that the ‘One Nation One Election’ initiative could be implemented as early as 2029. While previous legislative projections pointed toward a full cycle starting in 2034, Chouhan stated that the Lok Sabha elections could potentially be held alongside assembly elections in 22 states in 2029.

To achieve this timeline, some state assemblies might require dissolution before their terms expire. The proposal is currently under review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) tasked with examining the constitutional and practical feasibility of the related bills. JPC Chairman P.P. Chaudhary noted that such a move is possible if there is sufficient political will, though the final decision rests with the respective state chief ministers.

The initiative faces significant opposition from the Congress party. Leader P. Chidambaram has argued before the committee that the proposed legislation contradicts the basic structure of the Constitution and the federal system, noting that shortening the five-year terms of assemblies raises critical constitutional concerns. The Congress party has indicated plans for nationwide protests against the measure.
