Shiyazh Pete recognized on Indigenous Peoples Day

Shiyazh Pete, the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team, is being recognized during Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations. After a brief tenure with the Dallas Cowboys, where he made his preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals, Pete is currently a free agent.

Following his release from the Cowboys, Pete returned to the Navajo Nation to engage with his community. His recent activities include appearing at a homecoming pep rally at Shiprock High School, serving as grand marshal for the Northern Navajo Nation Fair Parade, and participating in an Indigenous Peoples Day event in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Pete follows a legacy of Native American athletes who have achieved professional success, such as Jim Thorpe of the Sac and Fox Nation, who competed in both Major League Baseball and professional football.
