SHL referee chief calls emergency meeting over goal controversies
Tomas Thorsbrink, the head of referees for the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), has called an emergency meeting with all 14 club sports managers following significant controversy regarding goal decisions. The early stages of the season have seen an increase in disputed goal situations, with Thorsbrink noting approximately 20 difficult cases compared to fewer than 10 at the same time last year.
The confusion among players, coaches, and supporters stems from inconsistent rulings regarding contact with goaltenders in the crease. Thorsbrink clarified that while a puck crossing the line is a definitive call, other situations rely on the referee's judgment regarding the timing and relevance of contact.
To mitigate future issues, Thorsbrink advised players to avoid the 'blue area' of the crease, noting that contact in the 'white area' generally favors the attacking player, whereas contact in the 'blue area' favors the goaltender. The upcoming meeting aims to clarify the rulebook and ensure all clubs are ‘speaking the same language’ rather than implementing immediate rule changes.
