Shnongrim landowners welcome probe into Shree Cement project
Landowners and farmers in Shnongrim have expressed support for the government’s decision to deploy an independent fact-finding committee to investigate a public hearing held on July 31 regarding the proposed Shree Cement project at Lum Syrman.
The community, which has raised concerns through the Khasi Students Union (KSU), welcomed the temporary suspension of Shree Cement’s activities pending the inquiry. However, they emphasized that the settlement of land ownership and the rights of affected residents must be resolved before any project activities proceed.
Local representatives have called for an impartial investigation, requesting the opportunity to present facts regarding the hearing, including allegations that landowners were prevented from attending. They also expressed condemnation regarding the arrest of KSU leaders following incidents in Shillong on August 19.
