Shobu Gakuen facility shifts from subcontracting to creative arts
Shobu Gakuen, a support facility for individuals with intellectual, mental, and physical disabilities in Kagoshima City, has transitioned from performing subcontracted tasks like sewing and weaving to focusing on original creative production.
For much of its 53-year history, the facility functioned as a training ground for social independence through repetitive labor. However, staff noted a turning point when they began embracing the unique, non-standard ways users approached tasks, such as irregular stitching. This led the facility to establish dedicated workshops for woodworking, pottery, embroidery, and papermaking, allowing users to develop as individual artists.
A special exhibition at the Kodama Museum in Kagoshima features approximately 1,000 works created by the facility's users, showcasing the diverse talents of its members.
