Shockletz aims for Melbourne Cup qualifiers in Australia

Trainer Ciaron Maher and national assistant Jack Turnbull are preparing the mare Shockletz for a bid at the Melbourne Cup. The campaign will start with the Melbourne Cup Carnival On Sale (1620 m) before targeting the two key qualifying races – the Archer Stakes on 12 September and the Bart Cummings on 3 October – each offering a ballot exemption for the Cup.

Shockletz, a sister to the staying racehorse Horrifying, has completed three early‑winter runs and a brief freshen‑up period, leaving her with just two weeks off before the upcoming staying contests. Maher and Turnbull say the mare is fit and well‑prepared, hoping the long‑term plan yields a place in Australia’s premier race.
