Shoegaze music experiences a modern resurgence

The shoegaze music genre is experiencing a significant resurgence in the 2020s, moving beyond its origins as a 1990s trend. While pioneers such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride remain highly influential, a new wave of artists, often referred to as ‘zoomergaze,’ is expanding the sound.

This modern movement is driven largely by Gen Z artists who utilize digital tools to create distorted, atmospheric music. For example, the artist Wisp gained viral success on TikTok after recording tracks in her college dormitory. Other emerging figures include Quannnic and Flyingfish, contributing to a diverse underground scene that extends from digital platforms to regional hubs like Philadelphia.
