Shokz expands open-ear headphone options for everyday use

Open-ear headphone technology is expanding beyond specialized sports use into everyday consumer markets, offering an alternative to traditional in-ear earbuds. This shift is driven by consumer demand for comfort and situational awareness during activities such as commuting, working, and exercising.

Shokz is positioning itself in this market with different audio delivery methods. The OpenDots 2 utilizes a clip-on, air-conduction design with a JointArc structure to provide a stable, non-invasive fit that rests near the ear. In contrast, the OpenRun Pro 2 employs a hybrid approach, combining bone conduction technology—which transmits sound through vibrations in the cheekbones—with air conduction drivers to keep the ear canal open.

While traditional earbuds provide immersive sound by sealing the ear canal, open-ear models allow users to remain aware of their surroundings, such as traffic or conversations. Users of open-ear devices often seek to avoid the pressure or discomfort associated with extended in-ear wear.
