Shopify acquires Tailwind Labs to boost custom storefront capabilities
Shopify has acquired Tailwind Labs, the team behind the widely used Tailwind CSS framework. Adam Wathan, founder and CEO of Tailwind Labs, stated that the move provides a stable, long-term home for the framework, which sees over 110 million weekly installs and is used to style products for companies such as Reddit, X, and Cloudflare.
Under the new arrangement, the Tailwind team will assist Shopify merchants in designing and hosting custom storefronts, managing inventory, and optimizing checkout experiences. Wathan noted that Shopify is at the forefront of user interface evolution, specifically regarding explorations into agentic commerce.
Tailwind’s open-source projects, including Tailwind CSS, will continue to be maintained under the MIT license with Shopify’s support. While existing customers will retain access to products like Tailwind Plus and ui.shadcn, the company has closed sign-ups for new customers to focus on its integration with Shopify.
