Shopify CEO warns of productivity risks from unverified AI content

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke has warned against the rise of “slop grenades” or “workslop”—unverified, AI-generated content such as emails, code, or documents that are passed to colleagues without proper review.

While Lütke has mandated that AI proficiency is a basic requirement for Shopify employees, he notes a paradox where AI speed does not always equate to increased productivity. If an employee uses AI to generate a draft in minutes but fails to check it for accuracy, the recipient may spend more time verifying, correcting, or rewriting the content than it would have taken to create it manually.

Lütke uses AI personally as a research assistant, programmer, and sounding board. At Shopify, the company has integrated AI into its resource management, requiring teams to explain why they cannot complete tasks using AI before requesting additional personnel or resources. However, the CEO emphasizes that the issue is not the technology itself, but the lack of responsibility for the final quality of the output.
