Shopify enables AI agents to manage checkout and order submission
Shopify has expanded its WebMCP support to include checkout functionality, allowing browser-based AI agents to interact with the final stages of a transaction. This update enables agents to read order details, update information such as shipping addresses or discount codes, and submit orders once the buyer provides explicit confirmation.
Unlike autonomous purchasing systems, these tools require human intervention for critical steps. Agents cannot input new credit card details and must hand control back to the buyer for 3D Secure authentication or other payment challenges. The system integrates with Shop Pay to facilitate smoother transitions.
The rollout includes four specific tools: ‘get_checkout’, ‘update_checkout’, ‘complete_checkout’, and ‘navigate_to_storefront’. This move follows previous support for product discovery and cart management. Shopify has already established partnerships with AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and Instinct to utilize these capabilities.
