Shopify posts 34% revenue jump as AI tools boost sales and shares

Shopify Inc. reported second‑quarter 2026 revenue of $3.58 billion, a 34% year‑over‑year increase, and gross merchandise volume (GMV) of about $115.5 billion, up roughly 32%. Gross profit rose around 30% and free cash flow reached $654 million, giving an 18% margin. The company attributed the strong performance to rapid adoption of its AI offerings, noting that AI‑driven traffic and orders tripled year‑over‑year and the Sidekick AI assistant helped merchants create 36,000 custom apps, three times the prior quarter.

Shares of Shopify surged in pre‑market trading, climbing 26% and posting gains of 17%‑34% across various market reports. Management forecast third‑quarter revenue growth in the low‑30% range, above analysts’ expectations of about 26%, and projected gross‑profit growth in the mid‑to‑high‑20s percent. Partnerships with OpenAI, Google and Microsoft were highlighted as drivers of AI‑enabled merchant demand, and the firm expanded its crypto‑payment capabilities by integrating USDC stablecoin payments through Coinbase and Stripe.

President Harley Finkelstein and CEO Tobi Lütke emphasized that AI is expanding what is possible for merchants of all sizes, positioning Shopify for continued growth in the coming quarters.
