Shopify Inc. sees surge in institutional investment

Institutional investors have been adding to their positions in Shopify Inc. Norris Financial Group LLC bought 13,368 shares worth about $1.6 million in the first quarter, according to its latest 13F filing. Capital International Investors increased its stake by more than 30%, adding over 11.7 million shares and becoming the company's largest disclosed holder with a value above $6 billion. Capital Research Global Investors expanded its position by over 500%, while the National Bank of Canada raised its stake by 36%. T. Rowe Price and Norges Bank Investment Management also added shares. At the same time, Capital World Investors trimmed its holding by nearly 30% and Baillie Gifford, Jennison Associates and Morgan Stanley Investment Management each reduced their positions.

Shopify, valued at a market capitalisation of roughly $225 billion, reported strong Q1 2026 results: gross merchandise volume rose 35% year‑over‑year to $101 billion, revenue increased 34% to $3.2 billion and free cash flow reached $476 million, delivering a 15% margin. President Harley Finkelstein highlighted four consecutive quarters of 30%+ growth in revenue and GMV, and noted that AI‑driven traffic to merchant stores grew eight‑fold year‑over‑year, with orders from AI‑powered searches jumping nearly 13‑fold. The company positions its platform as the only one enabling product discovery and checkout across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google, all integrated into a single system.
