Shopify introduces Shop MCP for AI agents and updates SEO landscape
Shopify is evolving its ecosystem through new technical capabilities and structural constraints. The platform has introduced Shop MCP, a connection based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This allows AI agents or applications to search the Shopify catalog, build shopping carts, and complete purchases using Shop Pay. This shift toward agentic commerce means that product catalogs—containing over one billion products—are becoming primary sales surfaces, placing higher importance on well-structured product titles, descriptions, and attributes for AI comprehension.
Regarding search engine optimization (SEO), Shopify remains a dominant force, powering 25.3% of mobile e-commerce sites. While the platform provides strong native fundamentals, such as automatic canonical tags, sitemaps, and structured data, it is characterized by a closed CMS architecture. This rigidity prevents direct server access or URL rewriting via .htaccess, requiring merchants to find specific workarounds within themes or settings to manage complex SEO requirements.
