Shopify reports $1.2 trillion in global economic activity from merchant ecosystem

Shopify data indicates that its merchant and partner ecosystem generated more than $1.2 trillion in global economic activity over the past year, representing a 110% increase from 2022. This ecosystem supported approximately 9.6 million jobs worldwide, a 193% increase compared to 2022 levels.

In the United States, Shopify-powered businesses generated $688 billion in economic activity and supported 2.3 million jobs between July 2025 and June 2026. This growth aligns with U.S. Census Bureau data showing business applications are at historically high levels.

The company launched ‘The Entrepreneur Effect,’ a global data hub to track the rising impact of entrepreneurship. The data shows rapid scaling for new sellers; in 2025, approximately 1.2 million stores made their first sale on the platform, averaging one sale every 26 seconds. The report attributes this acceleration to ecommerce and AI tools, which reduce traditional barriers such as technical skill, cost, and geography.
