Shopify stock rises as analysts view AI agents as growth opportunity

Shopify shares rose approximately 5% to $179.22 following a shift in analyst sentiment regarding the impact of artificial intelligence. While investors previously feared that AI shopping agents might threaten Shopify’s core business, many now view the company as a potential beneficiary that could serve as a primary checkout engine for AI platforms.

Analysts from Deutsche Bank, Cantor Fitzgerald, and Piper Sandler have highlighted Shopify’s strategic position. The company provides the necessary infrastructure—including product data management, payment processing, and order fulfillment—that allows autonomous agents like Meta’s Muse, OpenAI, or Google to facilitate transactions. This allows merchants to sell products directly within AI chat interfaces using Shopify’s Shop Pay system.

Despite the positive momentum, some analysts urge caution. Bhavin Shah of Deutsche Bank noted that “agentic commerce” has had a “negligible” effect on merchant revenue so far. Additionally, there are concerns regarding long-term control, as AI agents may eventually dictate product visibility or demand fees from the platforms facilitating the sales.
