Shopkeeper Driss Atounane Dies After Violent Attack on Brussels Tram

Driss Atounane, a 54‑year‑old supermarket owner from the Schaerbeek district of Brussels, intervened on July 23 when a man on Tram 55 in the Evere municipality directed racist and Islamophobic insults at a female passenger. The attacker struck Atounane on the head with a heavy object and kicked him repeatedly. He was taken to CHU Brugmann in Schaerbeek, fell into a coma and died on Sunday from his injuries.

Police arrested the suspect within minutes, placed him under an arrest warrant and a judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation as part of the investigation. The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the arrest. Local officials, including the incoming mayor of Schaerbeek, described Atounane’s death as an “unbearable injustice” and praised his courage.
