Short drama app downloads surge globally driven by emerging markets

The global short drama application market is experiencing rapid expansion, driven primarily by emerging markets. According to reports from Sensor Tower and Mintegral, downloads for short drama apps have surged significantly. Sensor Tower noted that in the first quarter of 2026, global downloads exceeded 850 million, a 140% year-on-year increase. Mintegral reported a similar trend for the first half of 2026, with downloads reaching 1.45 billion, representing a 95.5% year-on-year growth.

Growth is heavily concentrated in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and India, which together account for the vast majority of global downloads. Southeast Asia leads this trend, with Mintegral noting it accounted for 518 million downloads in the first half of the year. In terms of revenue, in-app purchases (IAP) reached approximately $750 million in Q1 2026.

While established players like DramaBox and ReelShort continue to lead in revenue, new competitors such as FreeReels and NetShort are seeing massive download growth. User engagement is also rising; the average daily usage time for short drama apps has increased significantly, approaching levels seen in traditional OTT streaming services, particularly in Southeast Asia.
