Shoulder strength exercises for adults over 60

For adults over 60, rebuilding shoulder strength often requires prioritizing scapular stability and range-of-motion control over the fixed-path resistance provided by gym machines. Research indicates that targeting scapular stabilizers is essential for maintaining joint health and managing rotator cuff-related discomfort.

As muscle mass and power output decline due to age-related sarcopenia, the nervous system's efficiency in recruiting muscle fibers also decreases. Unlike gym machines, which can bypass stabilizing muscles, home-based exercises using light dumbbells or resistance bands force the coordination of the shoulder, upper back, and core. This integrated approach improves functional stability and proprioception for daily tasks like reaching, pressing, and carrying.

Recommended exercises for improving functional capacity include band pull-aparts, half-kneeling presses, down dog to cobra, and shoulder halos. These movements focus on movement quality and neuromuscular recruitment rather than heavy loads to reduce joint strain.
