Shovel Superman Hall to open in Hualien marking flood recovery anniversary
The Shovel Superman Hall is set to open in Guangfu Township, Hualien, on September 23, marking the one-year anniversary of the devastating floods and mudslides caused by heavy rainfall in the Mataian Creek area. The facility, located within the Guangfu Sugar Factory, was established through a collaboration between Rotary International District 3490 and Taiwan Sugar Corporation to honor the volunteers known as ‘Shovel Supermen’ who arrived from across the country to assist in cleaning and rebuilding homes.
The opening ceremony will feature a reunion between local residents and the volunteers, a discussion on community resilience, and the unveiling of a six-meter-tall ‘Superman Shovel’ landmark carved from local cypress wood. Participants will also plant a ‘Tree of Hope’ to symbolize land recovery.
Vice President Hsiao Mei-chin noted the significance of the anniversary, stating that while the disaster changed many lives, it also revealed Taiwan’s strength through mutual support. She emphasized that the resilience shown by the volunteers—who worked to clear mud and transport supplies—is a testament to the nation's ability to protect one another during crises.
