Showerhead bacteria linked to chronic lung infection in China

A 39-year-old woman in China has been diagnosed with a lung infection caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) after suffering from persistent coughing and coughing up blood for three years. Despite seeking treatment at multiple medical facilities and using antibiotics, her symptoms repeatedly recurred.

Doctors eventually identified a connection between her condition and her bathing habits. The patient frequently turned on hot water and waited for the bathroom to fill with steam before entering. Additionally, her family had used the same showerhead for over 10 years without cleaning or replacing it.

Medical experts explain that certain atypical mycobacteria can survive in water environments and develop within water supply systems, particularly in moist areas where biofilms and sediment accumulate. When hot water is sprayed through an old showerhead, bacteria can be dispersed via water droplets and aerosols, which are then inhaled into the respiratory tract.
