Shravan Month Honored as Lord Shiva’s Sacred Period in Hindu Tradition

The Hindu month of Shravan (Sawan) is regarded as a special period devoted to Lord Shiva. Mythological accounts describe Shiva descending to earth during this month, reuniting with Parvati, and partaking the lethal poison produced in the Samudra Manthan, which turned his throat blue and earned him the name Neelkanth. To mitigate the poison’s effect, deities continuously offered water to Shiva, establishing the ritual of daily water abhisheka throughout Shravan.

Shravan also coincides with the monsoon season, leading to widespread greenery and heightened devotional activities, particularly on Mondays, which are observed with fasting and prayers across northern India, including cities such as Lucknow.
