Shree Cement mining project hearing in Meghalaya marred by police arrests and tear gas

The public hearing on Shree Cement Limited’s proposed integrated cement plant and limestone mining project in the Sutnga area of Meghalaya was disrupted by a heavy police presence. Authorities used tear‑gas shells, pre‑emptive arrests and road blockades to prevent dissenters, including leaders of the Jaintia National Council (JNC), from reaching the venue. JNC central president Sambormi Lyngdoh and other members were detained the night before the hearing and later described being treated "like criminals" after police employed lathi charges.

Local pressure groups and residents accused the state government of intimidation and forced land acquisition, alleging that police from Garo Hills were deployed to suppress opposition while supporters of the project were allowed free access. The hearing, chaired by Additional District Magistrate Alertson Nongbri, proceeded under tight security, with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board declaring it successful despite claims of a "private hearing" of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. Protesters reported damaged vehicles, stone‑pelting of an ambulance and injuries to medical staff, prompting a pending FIR.

Supporters of the project, including local village representatives, argue the venture will create jobs and boost the regional economy, while opponents contend it prioritises corporate interests over indigenous livelihoods.
