Shreveport debates wage increases to resolve driver shortage

A shortage of qualified commercial driver license (CDL) holders has caused significant delays in trash collection services across Shreveport. Public works officials report that while the city typically operates between 35 and 40 trucks daily, the shortage has reduced that number to approximately 28 or 29 trucks, leading to citywide pickup backlogs.

To address the labor shortfall, Mayor Tom Arceneaux has already increased driver pay to $21.78 per hour. However, members of the Shreveport City Council are debating an ordinance to raise wages further to $25 per hour to remain competitive with regional markets that offer between $25 and $30 per hour.

While council members argue higher wages are necessary for long-term recruitment and retention, Mayor Arceneaux has expressed concerns regarding the difficulty of funding such an increase within the municipal budget. The proposal and potential impacts on resident garbage fees are expected to be discussed during upcoming infrastructure and council meetings.
