Shreveport increases sanitation driver pay to combat worker shortage

The city of Shreveport is implementing an immediate pay increase for sanitation drivers to combat a shortage of personnel. Mayor Tom Arceneaux has proposed raising wages by $2.00 per hour, bringing the total to $21.78 per hour.

Public Works Director Jarvis Morgan noted that while truck availability has improved, the city is currently operating with approximately 28–29 trucks daily, down from the required 35–40, due to a lack of available drivers. Eleven candidates have recently interviewed and are undergoing background checks and drug testing.

Local council members have expressed varying opinions on the solution. Councilman James Green suggested the proposed raise is insufficient, advocating for a minimum of $25 per hour, while Councilman Grayson Boucher noted that current garbage fees may need to increase to ensure service sustainability.
