Shubhendu Adhikari announces student union elections for next year
West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has announced that student union elections in colleges and universities, which have been suspended for a long period, are set to resume next year. Speaking at the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) national convention for medical students at R.G. Kar Medical College, the Chief Minister noted he has had positive discussions with the ABVP observer regarding this matter.
During the event, Adhikari also addressed controversies at Jadavpur University, criticizing the use of separatist slogans at the institution despite receiving significant central government funding.
Additionally, Ratna Debnath, a legislator and mother of a victim from the R.G. Kar Medical College incident, raised allegations of corruption and evidence tampering against Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam. In response, the Chief Minister promised to investigate the claims and stated that the Secretary would be removed from his position if the allegations are proven true.
