Sony to phase out PlayStation discs by 2028 and close legacy digital stores

Sony has announced a significant shift in its hardware and software strategy, including plans to phase out physical PlayStation game discs by 2028. In conjunction with this move, the company will shut down the digital PlayStation Stores for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita consoles. The PS3 and PS Vita stores are scheduled to begin closing in Latin America and the Middle East between August and late 2026, with all other regions following in July 2027. While new purchases will be disabled, Sony stated that previously purchased content can be downloaded for the foreseeable future.

Shuhei Yoshida, former head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, commented on the transition, noting that he was unaware of the decision prior to its announcement. Yoshida, describing himself as a “totally digital consumer,” expressed that while he understands the concerns of collectors, the move toward digital distribution offers convenience. He argued that even physical disc users must frequently download patches and updates, making the distinction between formats less impactful for modern gaming.

Industry experts have debated whether this shift will lead to lower game prices. While some suggest that removing manufacturing and distribution costs could reduce prices, others remain skeptical, noting that publishers often retain savings rather than passing them to consumers.
