Shumen and neighboring municipalities launch historical tourism route
The municipalities of Shumen, Kaspichan, and Veliki Preslav have signed an agreement to develop a joint tourism route titled ‘This is Where Bulgaria Begins. Route of the Old Bulgarian Capitals’. The initiative is designed to capitalize on the international attention expected during the Eurovision 2027 contest, which will be hosted in Burgas.
The proposed route will connect five key historical sites: Pliska, the Court of Cyrillic, Madara, Veliki Preslav, and Shumen. It aims to present a unified historical narrative regarding the creation of the Bulgarian state, its early capitals, and the development of the Cyrillic alphabet.
Development of the product, which will include organized transport, programs, and reservation options, is expected to be finalized by mid-September. Local experts suggest that for the route to be successful, it must address logistical challenges such as transport infrastructure and incorporate diverse gastronomic and digital offerings, including multilingual audio guides.
