Shunichi Mizuoka re-elected as CDP House of Councillors faction chair
Shunichi Mizuoka has been re-elected as the chairperson of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan's House of Councillors faction. During a general meeting on August 25, Mizuoka was the sole candidate for the position and received approval from the assembly.
Mizuoka, entering his fourth term in this role, emphasized the heavy responsibility of leading the faction amidst a difficult political landscape. He noted that a primary challenge will be building a strong opposition force to confront the administration of Prime Minister Takaichi.
The re-election occurs as critical negotiations regarding a potential merger between three parties—the Constitutional Democratic Party, Komeito, and the Centrist Reform Union—reach a decisive stage. While Komeito and the Centrist Reform Union have shown positive attitudes toward the merger, discussions within the Constitutional Democratic Party have faced cautious views from local branches. Mizuoka has indicated a goal to establish a clear direction for these merger talks by the end of August.
