Shuri Castle lacquer painting completed for Seiden restoration

The lacquer painting work for the Seiden (main hall) and the connecting corridors of Shuri Castle was completed on September 17. This restoration process, which began in February 2024, involved more than 50 lacquer artisans performing up to 27 distinct coating steps.

The restoration utilized traditional techniques and natural materials, including Kushimagiri bengala from northern Okinawa Island and Kumejima red clay. For specific ceremonial areas, such as the floor of the ‘Osenmikochā’ and the king’s throne, artisans employed the ‘makiji’ technique, which involves spreading fine-grained sandstone over a lacquer base.

Following final inspections, the reconstruction of the Seiden is expected to be officially completed on September 30. Work is currently continuing on the surrounding areas, including the installation of piping and the development of the plaza.
