Shusha heritage preservation concerns rise over vandalism

Experts and public figures in Azerbaijan are calling for increased measures to prevent the defacement of historical monuments and natural sites in Shusha and other regions. Recent incidents involving graffiti and markings on rocks and historical structures have raised concerns regarding the preservation of cultural heritage.

Tourism expert Ceyhun Ashurov noted that while such behavior occurs globally, it remains unacceptable. He emphasized that tourism companies and guides must play a more active role in educating visitors about the importance of protecting historical sites, trees, and natural objects. He suggested that organized tours could help mitigate these non-mass incidents through better guidance.

Ayshen Fakhreddindigizi, representing the Recognition of Genocide Truths Public Union, addressed the specific issue of individuals writing martyrs' names on historical buildings and rocks. She argued that while such acts may stem from good intentions, they damage the very cultural heritage that represents the nation. She stated that respect for martyrs should be shown through the preservation of the lands and monuments they fought for, rather than by damaging public property and historical landmarks.
