Shutter Island achieves high viewership on Arte despite Scorsese's regrets

The film ‘Shutter Island’, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, achieved significant viewership during its broadcast on the Franco-German channel Arte on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The thriller drew an average of 1.10 million viewers, representing a 6.8% market share among viewers aged four and older. This performance marked the second-highest market share for the channel this season and its highest viewer count for a film broadcast on a Sunday evening.

Despite its television success and enduring popularity among genre fans, director Martin Scorsese has expressed mixed feelings about the project. In a career retrospective, Scorsese noted that the success of ‘The Departed’ encouraged him to make ‘Shutter Island’, but he suggested he might have preferred to move directly to his passion project, ‘Silence’. He remarked that he ‘probably should have moved on’ instead of pausing for the thriller, which notably did not receive any Academy Award nominations upon its release.
