Sia community protests against quarry expansion
Residents of the Sia community in Cyprus held a peaceful protest on Sunday to oppose the expansion of a local quarry. Melina Georgiou, President of the Sia Community Council, stated that the community will not accept any further expansion and is demanding a binding program for the gradual phase-out of quarrying activities.
Georgiou expressed concerns that current operations are violating previous agreements regarding established boundaries. She noted that the quarry is visible from the entire community and that the extraction is affecting Mount Xylias, which she described as the identity of the community. A meeting is expected to be arranged with the Minister of Agriculture to discuss the matter and the community's request for strict limits on quarrying operations.
