Siak Regent orders palm oil mills to stop burning waste to prevent haze

Afni Zulkifli, the Regent of Siak, has requested all palm oil mills (PKS) in Siak Regency, Riau, to temporarily suspend the burning of empty fruit bunches (Jangkos). This measure is intended to prevent worsening air quality as the region faces threats from forest and land fires (karhutla) and existing haze.

The request follows reports from the public and members of the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) regarding smoke production from these activities. The Regent has instructed the Licensing Service and the Environmental Agency (DLH) to issue formal advisories to all mill owners to ensure compliance until haze conditions improve.

In addition to industrial restrictions, the Regent warned the public against clearing land through burning, noting that such practices can escalate into uncontrollable forest fires. Local residents are encouraged to report any hazardous burning activities, and landowners have been reminded of the legal consequences should fires originate on their property.
