Sian Dowsett sentenced for sexual assaults aboard HMS Dauntless

Able Seaman Sian Dowsett, 25, was sentenced to 18 months in military detention and dismissed from the Royal Navy after a court‑martial at Bulford Military Court found her guilty of six counts of sexual assault. The offences involved two male and two female shipmates on the Type‑45 destroyer HMS Dauntless, where she deliberately targeted newly arrived crew members she believed would be less likely to report.

Assistant Judge John Atwill described Dowsett as a "predator" and a "disgraceful" figure, noting her behaviour included grabbing male sailors by the crotch, stroking arms, slapping women's backsides and squeezing breasts, as well as making inappropriate comments such as "Do you like that baby girl?" Victims reported anxiety, embarrassment and sleepless nights. The conviction underscores the Royal Navy’s commitment to addressing sexual misconduct within its ranks.
