Siang River erosion threatens farmland in Borguli village

Severe erosion caused by the Siang River is threatening agricultural land and livelihoods in the Mebo Sub-Division of East Siang district. Residents of Borguli village report that the river has already swept away large areas of cash crops, bamboo groves, and valuable Wet Rice Cultivation fields.

Local farmers, including Otil Tayeng, who reported the loss of approximately eight acres of bamboo grove, have expressed deep concern that their remaining land could be lost to the river. The erosion in the area reportedly began in 2021 and has intensified significantly in recent years.

Villagers have appealed to Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu to prioritize the issue. They are calling for immediate and permanent flood control measures, such as embankment reinforcement, to protect their livelihoods and prevent further property loss.
