Sibanye-Stillwater plans Mount Lyell restart in Tasmania
Sibanye-Stillwater has received board approval to further develop the Mount Lyell copper and gold project in Tasmania. The historical mining site is being re-evaluated using modern exploration techniques and existing infrastructure, such as shafts, roads, and energy connections, which can facilitate development compared to entirely new projects.
The project base has an estimated lifespan of approximately 23 years, though the mine is not yet back in commercial production. While historical activity provides a foundation, the economic viability of a restart depends on current metal prices, ore grades, investment requirements, and the need to modernize old facilities to meet contemporary environmental and safety standards.
