Sibari Region Advances Airport Feasibility Study and Beach Management Plan
The regional political group Noi Moderati pledged full support for a feasibility study of a new airport at Sibari, aiming to create a modern logistics hub for cargo and passenger flights that would serve the northern‑eastern Calabrian and Basilicata territories. The proposal, championed by Cassano allo Ionio mayor Giampaolo Iacobini, is presented as a strategic asset to shorten transport times for the area's citrus producers and to boost tourism and youth employment.
At the same time, the municipal council of Cassano allo Ionio has given unanimous backing to the long‑awaited Beach Plan, a coastal‑management framework covering roughly seven kilometres of shoreline between the Ionian coast and Sibari. After eighteen years of drafting and technical review, the plan is poised for final approval by the city council, aiming to clarify jurisdiction over free‑access beaches, private resorts and public areas while protecting the environment.
Both initiatives are expected to strengthen the local economy by improving infrastructure, easing market access for agricultural goods, and providing clearer regulatory oversight of the coastal zone.
