Russia investigates fatal pneumonia death of laboratory worker in Siberia FAST-MOVING

A 28-year-old laboratory technician, Darya Shipilova, died on October 2, 2026, after developing severe pneumonia while working at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute in Siberia. The death has prompted international scrutiny and speculation regarding a potential pneumonic plague exposure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that while no cases of plague have been registered, the absence of a confirmed diagnosis for the deceased remains a key uncertainty. Russian health regulator Rospotrebnadzor reported that the death was caused by pneumonia of unknown etiology and maintained that no biosafety incident occurred at the laboratory. Authorities noted that Shipilova had been appropriately vaccinated.

Approximately 200 people who were in contact with the worker were placed under quarantine and medical observation. Russian officials reported that testing of these contacts for high-risk pathogens, including plague, returned negative results. The WHO noted that based on current information, there is no evidence of ongoing transmission associated with the event.
