SIBioC and Italian Ministry of Health aim to standardize laboratory data

At the 58th National Congress of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Clinical Biology (SIBioC) in Rimini, medical professionals and the Italian Ministry of Health discussed the necessity of standardizing laboratory data. The goal is to transform the Electronic Health Record (Fascicolo Sanitario Elettronico) from a simple document archive into a dynamic tool that supports patients throughout their healthcare journey.

Key objectives include ensuring that diagnostic data can be transferred and utilized across different systems and facilities without losing clinical meaning. This initiative aligns with the goals of the Electronic Health Record 2.0 and the European Health Data Space (EHDS). Achieving interoperability is expected to facilitate early diagnosis, personalized treatments, medical research, and improved epidemiological planning.

However, several challenges were identified, including limited technical knowledge, fragmented information systems, communication difficulties between platforms, training deficiencies, and insufficient involvement of laboratory professionals.
