Sibiu and Cluj hospitals perform successful uterine-preserving surgery
Medical teams from the Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital and the Cluj County Emergency Clinical Hospital have successfully performed a complex, minimally invasive endovascular intervention to save a 28-year-old patient's uterus.
The patient, under the care of the Sibiu hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology department, was suffering from severe and recurrent genital hemorrhages. Imaging identified a hypervascularized endometrial nodular image, suggestive of retained products of conception. While such conditions often require a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus), doctors opted for selective arterial embolization to preserve the organ due to the patient's age.
The procedure was conducted through the blood vessels using small catheters guided by angiography. Interventional radiologists identified the specific arteries supplying the affected area and introduced special microparticles (500–700 μm) to controlledly block the abnormal blood flow. The intervention, coordinated by Dr. Florin Grosu from Sibiu and Dr. Dan Duma from Cluj, resulted in the immediate cessation of bleeding and the intact preservation of the uterus.
