Sibiu Contemporary Art Festival opens with Baia Mare painting legacy

The seventh edition of the Sibiu Contemporary Art Festival (SCAF 7) has opened in Sibiu, Romania, under the theme ‘The Garden of Entropy – War/Apple’. Organized by the Brukenthal von Studio Association, the event features over one hundred artists from Romania and abroad, with Germany and France serving as guest countries.

A central highlight of this year's festival is an exhibition dedicated to the Baia Mare School of Painting. This exhibition showcases a 130-year artistic tradition, facilitating a dialogue between established masters, university professors, and emerging students to demonstrate the school's continued relevance in contemporary art.

During the opening at the Ursuline Monastery, Romanian Senator Ruxandra Cibu Deaconu addressed the cultural significance of the festival and the ongoing discussions regarding the Ursuline Monastery. The building was recently put up for sale by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, with interest expressed by the Therme Group to acquire the site for 40 million euros to transform it into a regional center for art, culture, and education.
