Sibiu faces historic property sale and football club funding dispute

The municipality of Sibiu is facing two significant financial and administrative challenges involving public assets and funds.

First, the former Ursuline Monastery, a major historical complex in the city center, is reportedly for sale for 6.25 million euros. While the Ministry of Culture and the Sibiu County Council have declined to purchase the property, the Sibiu City Hall has the opportunity to exercise its right of preemption. The complex includes over 8,000 square meters of land, the former Andrei Șaguna Pedagogical College building, courtyards, and a sports field. Local discussions focus on whether the city can afford the purchase and subsequent restoration costs to transform the site into a cultural center or museum.

Separately, Sibiu City Hall has requested that the football club AFC Hermannstadt return 14.615 million lei (approximately 2.9 million euros) in previously granted funding. The request stems from alleged non-compliance with rules regarding the allocation and justification of public money. This development follows the club's bankruptcy filing, which was prompted by relegation from Liga 1 and accumulated debts exceeding 15.5 million lei.
